Forced to resort to violent crime to keep his failing business afloat, an ex-squaddie discovers that a local thug has been entrusted to look after a small fortune in diamonds. He senses an opportunity to get rich quick, but there’s a snag. The gems belong to a notorious East London gangster, and he’s not a man you steal from if you want to continue breathing.

When an unidentified body is found floating in Regent's Canal, DCI Jack Tyler is tasked with solving the sinister mystery. A difficult and frustrating case from the start, it doesn’t help that he’s been saddled with a TV crew making a documentary about homicide investigations.

With his week getting off to such a terrible start, Tyler finds himself hoping that the worst is now behind him. Unfortunately, his troubles are only just beginning...
